Rainwater Harvesting is the process of collecting and storing rainwater for use at a later date. A system utilised to collect rainwater is composed of a number of items designed to ensure that pollutants are filtered out of the flow, contaminated water is redirected, odours and discolouration are removed, and other steps taken to improve the final quality of water. Smart Water stock a range of essential and optional products and accessories that can be used to create a customised rainwater harvesting system.
Smart Water Shop stock a range of Rainwater Harvesting Supplies, including:
Rain Heads (and other products used for Pre-Tank Filtration) help to keep your harvested rainwater clean by preventing leaves, debris, mosquitoes and pests entering your rainwater harvesting system through your downpipes and gutters. These products feature a course mesh filter which prevents leaves entering, and a finer mesh filter that is effective against smaller particles and mosquitoes.
In addition to pre-filtering rainwater, Rain Heads can help to reduce blockages (which can cause water to overflow instead of being directed into your tank) and water pooling in gutters (which provides a fantastic breeding environment for pests.)
Water Diverters improve water quality and reduce overall tank maintenance by preventing the first flush of water (which may contain roof contaminants) from entering your tank. They help to ensure cleaner water is available for use, which protects pumps and internal household appliances (such as washing machines, toilets, and hot water systems.)
Effectively manage overflowing water and make it easy to connect standard plumbing fittings to your tank with tank overflows. Our range of overflows can be paired with mosquito-proof screens or flap valves, and some can be used to increase your tank’s overall water storage capacity.
Tank Outlets are provided with all supplied tanks, however, Smart Water also offer additional outlets which can be installed to allow for multiple applications and on-site detention.
Tank Inlet Screens and Covers assist in keeping leaves, animals and insects out of your water tank without interrupting flow, ultimately improving overall water quality. For a clean tank and to minimise water loss during heavier rainfall, ensure you keep your inlet screens clean and free of excess debris. Tank Covers are designed to prevent sunlight entering a tank and creating an environment ideal for algae to thrive – they are usually installed in conjunction with a screen, sometimes with predefined screw holes for easy installation.
Level Switches and Monitors are important additions to any rainwater harvesting system, as they assist in helping the system and user identify how much water is currently stored and available for use. Dial gauges provide the simplest solution for water monitoring, while float gauges are more robust and long-lasting. Electronic Switches are also available which can be used to control pumps and water flow. By visually reflecting the accurate water level, these products can help with water rationing in times of drought and assist in ensuring resources are used sustainably.
Even with all the previous filtration products installed, you may still want to take steps to ensure the water you have harvested and stored is the cleanest and best quality possible. The most common variety of post-pump (or ‘after pump’) filtration is cartridge filters: products that are effective and efficient at removing odour, discolouration and sediment from your water, which may damage appliances when used for home supply. There are also a range of whole house systems, which treat water using methods such as UV clarification.
In addition to post-pump filtration units, water purification solutions can also be added directly to your rainwater to improve overall quality.
Our range of Rainwater Harvesting Accessories includes ‘Rainwater in Use’ signs, signs for taps and faucets, and additional filtration products (such as gutter mesh.) Although not essential for rainwater harvesting, these items are still useful for any functioning system.
